Som en av toppkommentarerna till videon säger: "You could really tell that they wanted people to think of this game as THE castlevania game. Top of the line, gold standard."

Populous on pc engine

Populous is known as a strategy cult classic. I decided that I should finally give it a try.

It was made by Bullfrog, the innovative company that also made Magic Carpet and Syndicate I have blogged about earlier, as well a Theme Park and other popular titles that usually had some strategy element.

Populous were their second game but their first popular title. It was released in 1989.
In the original PC version you of course use a mouse. On SNES and SFC the game supports a mouse too. However, on Pc Engine you have to use a controller. I still think it plays okay. The game is also completely in English, just as the Japanese Super Famicom version.

_
You raise the land and the population starts building houses. After a while your mana goes up so you can move over to your opponent and create mountains among his houses so they get destroyed. You can also send in a knight to destroy his houses.

Other options you can click is to create a leader, to set your villages in Attack mode, to move the Papal symbol closer to the front to make your villagers stronger.

Then, when your mana is much stronger than your opponents, you can click on the skull to enter Armageddon mode. Then all villagers go together in a final battle against the opponent and you win. That's about it.

_
The main annoyance I have with this game is the lack of anything to do. It feels like a simplistic strategy game, simpler than any I have played before. The amount of things you can do are maybe 5-10.

Sunteam_paul personally enjoys this game, which is unusual for his pc engine reviews (http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Populous.htm). There are also many other positive reviews and youtube comments for the game. Personally I will compare it to a version of Sim City where the only thing you do is lower and raise land, create disasters, and set your villagers in fight mode at times.

The downside with the Pc Engine version is that you don't have any save function and I don't think you even unlock anything. Instead you can load any of the 199 levels right from the start. According to what I've read the game was supposed to have a save function. It either became to expensive or they couldn't technically do it. This omission makes the game feel incomplete and takes away the feeling of accomplishment when playing.

I think the game could be interesting from a historically point of view or for someone who would like to play a simplistic building-strategy game where you don't need to have too many things to keep in mind.

Moto Roader (Pc Engine)

This is a racing game for the Pc Engine where you can play up to 5 players. I think that as a top down racing game it lasts longer than the racing games you drive into the screen. It is probably a lot of fun with a multitap and a couple of friends.
Some people complain that the steering is too difficult but as you can see I quickly got used to it. Secondly, you can easily change your steering in the shop, where you select one of two different types.

This game was so much fun that I spent a couple of hours until I beat it. I had some luck, but I think that's part of the game.

When you reach the end of the screen the car respawns and you lose one on the timer. Go below zero and you are game over.

The interesting thing is that is a lot of the game is a strategy element in how you spend your money to upgrade your car. If you start by buying a better engine, that money will have been wasted once you buy a better engine. But if you don't buy upgrades you won't win races and get more money. And you can't sell your items for money back, so chose wisely.

__

At 00:18 you can see that to change steering, chose between Handle A or Handle B.
Another useful item in the shop is the Gas Tank. It will allow you to fill up the counter once during a game and it can save you from a game over.

I am the white car. In the first race I saved almost all my money but still finished second. Thanks to that, I could be the best possible engine for the second race.

__

I cut out some races in between so you'll see the last heats here only. I hadn't played most of the courses before so that's why my actual driving is bad. But I won!

Different upgrades do different things. The Turbo will increase your speed but you will accelerate slower. With higher speeds you will need better brakes and tires.

You can get the game in our webshop right here: http://japanspelshop.se/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=955

Dungeon Explorer for Pc Engine

I was happily surprised by Dungeon Explorer. It felt like the game Diablo that I played a lot back in the late 90's. Dungeon Explorer is from 1989, and I think it is impressive how many enemies at the same time on the screen. The SNES might not have been capable of this without slowdowns or flickering.

The screen is a bit dark, I think I used the wrong cables this time... But the game is a bit dark, since it is in dungeons.

_

I think there a lot of action/RPGs well worth checking out. Neutopia is also a nice game. Personally, I don't like the more adventure-like games, such as Legend of Zelda and Neutopia where you walk a lot back and forth a lot. Walking is the main element in those games, in my opinion. A game such as Dungeon Explorer is more straight forward action and is more enjoyable for me. Also this doesn't require Japanese knowledge as far as I can tell from my short playing.

Street Fighter II for Pc Engine, with video

I finally made a video.

Gameplay on second highest difficult. No edits, cuts or pauses.
There is a part 2 of the video also with the last matches.

__
I started with a 3 button controller but later changed to the normal 2 button. The 2 button controller works better than you might think. Changing between kick and punch takes a little of course (change with the select button, or set it to start) but when I played against Honda I started to do it somewhat succesfully. For me it didn't detract much from the gameplay actually. I have a played a lot of this game on SNES and the pc engine version is not far behind it even with the crippled controller. It may be slightly easier too, although it is hard to say, but the opponents seem a little stupider in this pc engine version.

In any case, I have fun with this game. You probably only need two buttons to play it.

Aoi Blink and Makai Prince Dorabocchan for Pc Engine, with my own videos

I finally received both a DVD recorder and CD-Rs. I quickly made two videos of Pc Engine platforming games. I have a couple more videos on their way.

This is my first time playing the games so I am not that good. I got stuck in the first game for a couple of minutes, and in the second game for a while also.

Final Match Tennis for Pc Engine

UPDATE 2013-08-11: video

In the last few days I have played Final Match Tennis on my Pc Engine.
I am one of those people that play Racing and Tennis games. That is good for me. Most people buy the Pc Engine for its many shoot'em up games that I sell at a higher price. I get to keep the cheap games.

This is our AV modded Ten No Koe 2. It is like an AV Booster, but you can save in the games that have a save feature. An AV Booster is also harder to come by.

We can also RGB mod it, but it is more expensive (300 SEK extra, or 50$). I don't personally have demand for RGB, but we constantly get requests from customers who request the best possible picture and sound. Even some that don't play their games, so as to not cause scratches and marks. To each his own, as they say.

I made a video (2013-08-12) of some gameplay. You can set the difficulty with a code in the beginning, and Level 3 is appropriate for me. I am not very good though. I am Lendl (white shorts, starting on the downside of court). Lendl is the hardest hitter of the game.
_

Here is a second video where I am Edberg (blue shirt) playing against Becker, as it happens.
_

The game has a simple structure. You can play exhibition game, tour, or practice. I think you can play up to four players with a multitap, but I don't have a multitap to try right now.

As I have written before, I enjoy tennis video games on any console. I have some experience by now , I think, so I know what a good and bad tennis game is.
How would I rate this one?
  • The controls are simple. One button for normal shot,  one for a slice shot, and press Start for lob. This works excellent. The lob isn't useful though, because it is short and the opponent can often smash it.
  • There are no strange additional moves. No dubble-tapping, or button combinations, or holding the button to hit harder. You just press the button to make the shot. Use the arrows to place the ball.
  • The direction of the ball depends on how close you are to it when you hit it, and if you hit it early or late. I can't explain exactly. It requires some practice to learn, but most tennis games are made this way anyways.
  • I liked the difficulty level. The ball easily goes outside court, so you have to learn exactly how to hit it to place it inside the court. It can be annoying, but reasonable.
  • You can chose between 16 different players. Their names are in Japanese, but it is the players from around 1988 such as Edberg, Lendl, McEnroe and Chen. They are well adjusted. The baseline players who can run fast left and right, but move slowly up and down. They are also not very good at making stop balls at the net. Other players are net players, and move fast up and down, but are slow left and right. Some players hit the ball harder and so it more easily goes outside the court, and other players hit it loose. Some have top spin, etc.
  • A good thing is that the opponents are never too hard. They always hit the ball in a normal way and they can be beaten if you play well. So far I also wouldn't call the game too easy either. Since you are game over as soon as you lose a match, it can be challenging, especially if you only play 1-set matches. In each game you can chose between 1 set or 3 set, and I think I should start playing 3 set in the more difficult matches.
  • A nice feature that I appreciate is that there are no long pauses between balls. Some 2-3 seconds after the last ball you can start playing the next.
  • I also liked that it is well possible to catch smashes if you stand in the right place, so a smash doesn't "kill" the ball. And you can usually return the opponents serves , unlike some more realistic tennis games where this can be impossible.
  • You will throw yourself automatically if the ball is far to reach. This is nice.
  • It is a bit annoying though that when you play in the Tour, you are game over as soon as you lose a match. You start with Australian Open, and then French Open. I made it to the final of the French, but then I lost and was game over.
What I think could be improved is that the slice and lob are useless as soon as you move from the baseline, because they always go too far. The slice button can be used as a stop ball for the baseline player type. Unfortunately the baseline player is almost useless by the net because his stop balls always hit the net, at least on grass. On clay, he plays better by the net because the ball bounces higher.

Well, that's about it I think. You might tell that I enjoy playing this game. I looked at some youtube clip and they all love it too, some say it is the best tennis game ever. It has its own website, www.final-match-tennis.com, with info about the players and so on.

Pc Engine handhelds, and a PI-AD18

Last week I received some junk pc engine stuff from Japan. One of the things I got was a PI-AD18, which is a connector adapter between a the handheld Pc Engine LT and the Super CD-ROM unit.

There is the "cheap" Pc Engine handheld called GT which only costs around 150-200$ in working condition. The GT was released in 1990 for 250$. As compared to the Game Boy that sold for $89 in 1989 and later dropped to $49.

Usually the GT will need some restauration, similar to the Game Gear. I once bought a non working GT, had it fixed, and sold it together with a power supply.

Playing R-Type I am. Considering the time and effort, and risk involved, I don't think it was worth it for me to buy it.

The screen is a bit muddy, but the GT is alright if you just want to play and are not too picky. It has a color display and pretty impressive sound for such a small thing.

It really consumes batteries, so you probably want a power supply if you don't want to buy a pack of batteries every day.

The Pc Engine LT is a different business. This console can cost from 1000$ and up on eBay, and they are not cheaper Japan. I had to borrow a picture from http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?p=1691665.

I think LT stands for Lap Top and it has a high resolution LCD screen.  I don't think it can be used on batteries though, you have to keep it plugged in.

So in my Pc Engine junk bin I found the connector thing. I didn't know what it was when I bought it because it looks almost like a Ten No Koe 2 (I will explain what that is some other time).

The PI-AD18 allows you to connect your LT with a Super CD-ROM unit. As i don't think anyone will buy it in Sweden in the next year or two, I went onto the pcenginefx.com forum and put up an ad for 80$. I quickly had three people telling me they wanted it.

It makes me wonder if I should have put up an auction instead. I found that one sold on eBay in 2005 for 50$, so 80$ seemed reasonable either way. The buyer is from Germany. He told me he already has mostly everything Pc Engine related.

My junk bin also contained a Super CD-ROM unit, a Duo, a CD-ROM2 with IFU, and a TV Tuner for the GT. There's a lot of gadgets in the Pc Engine world.

Gradius for Pc Engine

I have been playing some Gradius for Pc Engine. I wanted to finally play a game to the end that is not on the Game Boy.

Gradius is a pretty sweet and short game. I like Gradius because it feels like a complete and very nice standard shooter, with nothing weird in it. No surprise death as in Salamander (Life Force). No bullet hell as in some games. And the levels are varied, good graphics and good music. Unlike a famous game like this.
Xevious on NES. The most sold shooter for the famicom in Japan. Did people really play this? Why?

Also you have to think strategy in Gradius -- should I use Laser or the Double? I also like how you can destroy the computer so easily when you power up. Hahaha!

Some reviewers complain that Gradius on Pc Engine is not a good game because of slowdowns. They are wrong, a normal user would hardly be able to get through it without the slowdowns.

Well, I made it almost to the end once, getting some help from the Konami code (all Options + Shield, but you can only use it 5 times). The boring part is that the first levels are quite simple and I don't think there are any warps, so I'm getting tired of playing the game now. Well, it has been sold so I have to send it soon.

I do have the Saturn version, which is said to be a good port of the pc engine version. Actually the pc engine version is a good port of the arcade version. In the Saturn version you can chose to turn on or off slowdows, proving that slowdowns are part of the game. They could have eliminated slowdows by lowering the numbers of Options (Options are the small little missile helpers you have). They did it to the NES version. Clearly they intended there to be slowdows in the Pc Engine version.

Since I made it to just before the Brain, I might just call myself the moral winner of the game and leave it at that. Sort of like I call myself practically finished with my degree.... I think you should play a game because it is fun, not because you have to beat it. I always stop playing games when they aren't fun. (I do that with books too)

Here is someone else's video.

He likes Lasers more than I do. What's up with that? The Pc Engine has turbo controllers so the Double is usually superior except if you have some need to defeat every boss ship in 2 seconds.

I will probably be coming back to the game soon enough.

Street Fighter II comparisment, pc engine

I played some Street Fighter II on Pc Engine yesterday.

I think I am pretty decent at the SNES game (or Super Famicom) so I can tell what the difference is between the two games. And I will say: not much. The graphics is a little worse on the pc engine version but not in any way that effects game play. The sound and music are more synthetic. Game play is almost identical though.  I played it to the end on the second highest difficulty level.

One small difference I noticed is that you can kick the Spain Boss (Vega?) as he jumps on the fence, and that makes him easier. Another difference is that you get dizzy more easily but it applies to the opponent too.

It can be a little difficult with the standard two or three button pc engine controller. You  change between kick and punch with the Run button. It actually works reasonably, but it makes it a little slower to make a fireball with Ryu and I had some problem with the final boss (Bison?) because of that. They did release a 6 button Pc Engine controller just for this game, but it is relatively uncommon.

Too bad I didn't get to see the credits but maybe that is only on the Turbo version on SNES?

I also played a little of the Saturn port.
It was way too easy !! I tried to change to the highest difficulty, but still could run right through it. So eventhough it has such nice graphics and CD-music, I'd rather play either the Pc Engine or the SNES version. Maybe I should try the Mega Drive version, but it is usually said to be inferior to the Pc Engine one and that's not encouraging.

I received two Pc Engine Duos today

I received two Pc Engine Duos today.

The black Duo (above) seems to have the same caps as the Game Gear, the shining chubby type. They are of crap quality and need replacing. I also don't have any power plug that fits into the Duo so I can't test it.

The Duo-R (above) has different caps, nice black/blue ones. But look at the Hu Card connector, there is some serious vandalism in the middle of it.

I am thinking I might be able to replace the broken connector with the working one. I hope they are the same size.

Pc Engine games

I received some Pc Engine games today with manuals but no box. I put them in some old CD Cases instead, mostly junk cases I got for free 10 years ago.
I think they actually look better like this, no?

All the games in the picture are good games. The junk games did not get a case.
Look up there to the left, it's Ninja Spirit! That's pretty sought after.
